Because genuine jade can be quite valuable, imitations are everywhere – from dyed quartz to plastic and glass. You don't need a gemologist to spot most fakes. Use these at-home and in-store checks to protect your purchase.
1. The Temperature Test
Real jade feels cool to the touch, even on a warm day. Hold the stone against your cheek or the inside of your wrist. It should stay cool for a few seconds before gradually warming. Imitations like glass or plastic will warm up almost instantly.
2. The Sound Test
Gently tap two jade pieces together (if you have a second one) or tap the stone with a metal object. Genuine jade produces a clear, bell-like chime. Fake materials usually make a dull, plastic-like click.
3. The Density and Weight
Jade is denser than most simulants. For its size, real jade feels noticeably heavier. If a large bangle feels suspiciously light, it’s likely resin or glass.
4. Light Transmittance
Hold the jade up to a bright light source. Real jadeite often shows a fibrous, slightly interwoven texture (called “flocculence”) or delicate internal clouds. Glass imitations may have perfectly round bubbles; plastic tends to be perfectly uniform or have mold marks.
5. The Scratch Test (with Caution)
Jade is tough. A steel knife or pin will not scratch genuine jadeite or nephrite easily. However, this can damage the piece’s polish, so only attempt it on an inconspicuous area if you're willing to risk minor surface marks.
